I interviewed last week for a job that I kinda sorta wanted. Im kind of ready for a change from video but I thought I would look around for video jobs to see if mixing it up would stoke the fire. Well the group I interviewed with is an agency, which means a ton more work and hours...but it would be a change of scene and a chance to make some connections and move up.

I didn’t think I interviewed well and didn’t really care. The amount of work seemed like it wasn’t remotely worth the pay and so when they asked me to follow up with them with a different portfolio I didn’t and kinda figured that was the end of that.

Well I got a call today asking for a follow- up interview. hmm. So what do I do? I know I don’t want the job...pretty sure I don’t...and where Im at right now is a bad time to negotiate (we just finished a 2 year long reorganization like, a month ago).

Thoughts? Just go for it and try and use it as leverage anyway? if it backfires and they don’t buy into it then im stuck between showing that I was only interested in the job as leverage or going to a new company I have no real interest in.

Of course Im still actively looking at programs that get me out of video anyway.

If you know you won’t take the job, I tend to say don’t waste people’s time. I get a queasy feel anyway about trying to leverage anyone when you’re not all in. Could backfire.

Take the follow-up interview, if you’re still looking for something new, it’s practice talking about yourself and your projects. If they make an offer, evaluate it then. You could use it for leverage, take it, or just tell them no thank you. I don’t know what your market is like though, or if you’ll be burning any bridges doing so .

Interviews can go both ways. Anything they could tell you that would change your mind? Use the interview as an opportunity to ask those questions. If you already did, and they don't have those answers, then I might just pass. Waste of everyone's time.

I think it was pretty clear to me what the job expectations were when I interviewed. There is opportunity , but it requires a huge increase in workload and I don’t know if that’ s worth it to me.

Fair enough. I know the job I’d like to do isn’t the one I’m doing. But my benefits are worth it now. Tough to change sometimes.

Thats where Im stuck.  Im 90% sure that I don’t want the job, but I could use something to change my momentum here...but at the same time it feels a little wrong.

I guess if I knew I was not going to take Job B I would not go for the second interview unless I was looking for leverage on my Job A for a salary increase or promotion. The thing is if they call your bluff have to go work at Job B.

I know that feeling, more than I’ll say here. Something right will come along if you keep your eyes open . When it does, you shouldn’t be afraid to pull the trigger.  But it needs to feel right.

If you dont want that other job, do not use it as leverage. You may be stuck with your dick in your hand. Consider the three crappy potential outcomes:

1) employer calls your bluff , you’re forced to take the new job you don’t want

2) Leverage doesn’t work and employer will view you as one foot out the door which spells trouble in the near future.

3) leverage doesn’t work and new job fails spectacularly, or the position wasn't really there waiting for you ... unemployment.

I’d follow up with more work samples and go meet with them again, unless you really don’t want the job. Be open with them. Maybe they have some needs that are greater than what they’re advertising. A man’s job is a tricky thing how it ties into everything else we are trying to accomplish in the bigger picture and sometimes there’s outside advice available. I know that I’ve received the strongest, clearest outside advice when it comes to my own career and now, it seems like it’s being made Job One in the scheme of things. If you get my drift.

Then again... How many times have any of us been interviewed for something that there was already an incumbent for and they were just going through the motions? Interviewing for jobs is shopping each other and potential customers may or may not buy.

Nothing wrong with interviewing, but if you don’t want the job then what’s the point? Let them interview someone who is actually interested. No one likes a snake.

I’ve seen that plenty of times.  Departments go through the motions of an external search, only to install someone internal as chair.  Waste of everyone’s time usually.

I have several comments floating in this thread, but interviewing is a two-way street and how many of us have had our time wasted when interviewing us was only going through a motion? I take your point, but it’s all about shopping and not everyone buys.

And we go in and pour out our souls as if. I hate it. And now I’m too old so I’m stuck, unless I move to Taos, where they need teachers.

Is there a number/situation where that job would truly make you happy? If so, throw it out there if it comes up.  They can only say no - and it will give you some good practice, maybe a confidence builder.

If not, don’t waste *your* time - unless you think it’s good practice for something in the future.

They always need teachers.  Question is whether they are willing to pay for them.

Everything has a price - If they want you, make them pay more.

Figure out how much $$$ you would need to move, then add some on to it.

Some companies will still waste the shit out of your time by posting a job, interviewing external candidates, and then giving the job to an internal candidate that they wanted to hire all along.

Screw ‘em. Don’t ever feel as if you are wasting somebody’s time in talking about a new opportunity.

Good point, although the chances they are not really interested should go down a bit if they want a second interview (although I’ve seen that happen before).

On the other hand, if you know you don’t want the job, it’s kinda wasting your own  time as well.
